Massive continuously growing malware campaign that has already infected nearly 5 million mobile devices worldwide.

01:28 0

Security researchers have discovered a massive continuously growing malware campaign that has already infected nearly 5 million mobile devices worldwide.

Dubbed RottenSys, the malware that disguised as a 'System Wi-Fi service' app came pre-installed on millions of brand new smartphones manufactured by Honor, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, Samsung and GIONEE—added somewhere along the supply chain.
All these affected devices were shipped through Tian Pai, a Hangzhou-based mobile phone distributor, but researchers are not sure if the company has direct involvement in this campaign.

According to Check Point Mobile Security Team, who uncovered this campaign, RottenSys is an advanced piece of malware that doesn't provide any secure Wi-Fi related service but takes almost all sensitive Android permissions to enable its malicious activities.

"According to our findings, the RottenSys malware began propagating in September 2016. By March 12, 2018, 4,964,460 devices were infected by RottenSys," researchers said.

To evade detection, the fake System Wi-Fi service app comes initially with no malicious component and doesn’t immediately start any malicious activity.
Instead, RottenSys has been designed to communicate with its command-and-control servers to get the list of required components, which contain the actual malicious code.
RottenSys then downloads and installs each of them accordingly, using the "DOWNLOAD_WITHOUT_NOTIFICATION" permission that does not require any user interaction.

Hackers Earned $115,000 in Just Last 10 Days

t this moment, the massive malware campaign pushes an adware component to all infected devices that aggressively displays advertisements on the device’s home screen, as pop-up windows or full-screen ads to generate fraudulent ad-revenues.

"RottenSys is an extremely aggressive ad network. In the past 10 days alone, it popped aggressive ads 13,250,756 times (called impressions in the ad industry), and 548,822 of which were translated into ad clicks," researchers said.

According to the CheckPoint researchers, the malware has made its authors more than $115,000 in the last 10 days alone, but the attackers are up to "something far more damaging than simply displaying uninvited advertisements."
Since RottenSys has been designed to download and install any new components from its C&C server, attackers can easily weaponize or take full control over millions of infected devices.
The investigation also disclosed some evidence that the RottenSys attackers have already started turning millions of those infected devices into a massive botnet network.
Some infected devices have been found installing a new RottenSys component that gives attackers more extensive abilities, including silently installing additional apps and UI automation.

How to Detect and Remove Android Malware?

To check if your device is being infected with this malware, go to Android system settings→ App Manager, and then look for the following possible malware package names:
com.android.yellowcalendarz (每日黄历)
com.changmi.launcher (畅米桌面)
com.android.services.securewifi (系统WIFI服务)
com.system.service.zdsgt
If any of above is in the list of your installed apps, simply uninstall it.

Last year, HTC launched a flagship high-end smartphone that appeared to be worth the money. The reviews were generally positive, especially when it came time to point out how eye-catching the handset was thanks to those striking color choices. But, as has been the case with a lot of HTC-branded smartphones, the U11 faded out of the limelight pretty quickly.

Here one day, gone the next.

This happens to a lot of phones, of course. A lot of phones see the light of day every year, and there's only so much room in the news cycle for so many. Samsung's Galaxy S9 will rake in most of the attention throughout the beginning of this year, but even it, too, will eventually just slip out of the news cycle.

Except when it comes to comparisons. The Galaxy S9 is one of those smartphones that is so good that it will inevitably be compared to all future handsets launched this year, both from Android manufacturers and the inevitable iPhone X successor that arrives later this year.

But, just like last year, and the year before that, HTC is going to try and win over a few new potential customers, and hopefully keep the loyalists around for another extended stretch of time. That handset looks to be the U12+, which was leaked out not too long ago. It has all of the specifications that we'd expect in 2018 from a high-end flagship, including the powerful processor, the big display and minimal bezels, and more cameras than we probably need.

The image that leaked out recently shows off the back and front of the rumored handset, but the overall quality of the image isn't great. We can see all of the things mentioned above: Two cameras on the back, the fingerprint sensor, the pair of cameras on the front, and the minimized bezels. But the handset itself isn't that appealing to me. Especially that camera system on the back. I'm not a fan of that aesthetic at all. The silver stands out, and not in a good way.

But, like I said the quality of the image isn't great and maybe whatever color options HTC has in store for us this year can make that silver pop-out less unappealing.

The leak of the U12+'s specs and design got me wondering early this morning if this is going to be the handset that catapults HTC to the top of the heap again. There is a lot of competition out there, and HTC has a hard road ahead of it. And now I'm wondering what, exactly, HTC might be able to do to sway you over to their brand this year.

What, if anything, do you think HTC could do in 2018 --whether with their first high-end flagship phone of the year or some other device later on-- to convince you to either switch to an HTC smartphone, or stick with them for a little longer? Or have you completely moved on from the HTC brand?

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus serves up the big-screen experience on a shoestring

07:02 0

a massive deal in its homeland thanks to its range of well-made smartphones which deliver a polished user experience at a low cost.

Times are perhaps changing for the company, however; its Mi Mix and Mi Mix 2 phones are premium propositions and it has been eyeing up a move into western markets for quite some time.

Even so, it hasn't forgotten its budget roots, and with that in mind we're taking a look at the Redmi 5, Xiaomi's attempt to bring 16:9 screens to the masses.

It's available from online resellers such as GearBest for around £130 – making it one of the most attractive low-cost Android phones on the market right now.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Design & Display

Xiaomi used to reserve its "phablet" style budget phones for the Redmi Note range, but this year it has dropped the "Note" moniker and has simply created two versions of the same basic handset - the Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus. The former has a 720p screen and weaker chipset, but is cheaper and smaller. The Plus version – which is what we're reviewing here – has the same basic design but a better screen and internal tech.

Much was made of the Redmi 5 range's move to a 16:9 aspect ratio screen when it was first announced, and it certainly doesn't disappoint. There are still small bezels at the top and bottom of the display, but they're drastically reduced when compared to what budget buyers have been used to over the past few years.

In terms of overall dimensions the Redmi 5 Plus is around the same size as the OnePlus 5T, and has a pleasant rounded design which makes it comfortable to hold. Most of the bodywork is metal, but there are plastic sections at both ends which allow the antenna to function. In terms of design language it shares a lot with previous Xiaomi phones, and that's no bad thing.

The power button and volume rocker are on the right-hand edge, while the dual Nano SIM tray – which doubles as a MicroSD slot – is on the left. The bottom has a single speaker and a Micro USB port (no USB Type-C here, unfortunately) and the top has a 3.5mm headphone jack and IR blaster, the latter being a common feature on Xiaomi's phones. On the back, there's a 12 megapixel camera, LED flash and fingerprint scanner; the scanner rests just under your finger when you're holding the phone and is both fast and accurate. The 5.99-inch IPS screen may lack the punch of an OLED panel but for £130, it's hard to complain. It's a 1080p display so everything looks sharp, and colours are generally bold and lively. Even blacks are quite deep, which makes a nice change from the pale and pasty IPS screens we've seen on other budget blowers. In direct sunlight it can be a bit hard to see, but otherwise this is an excellent panel.

News for Whatsapp User(WHATSAPP DELETE UPDATE)

WHATSAPP DELETE NEWS UPDATE: NEW ADDITION TO SAVE YOU FROM A LOT OF EMBARRASSMENT SOON

PEOPLE OFTEN MAKE SILLY MISTAKES LIKE SENDING MESSAGES INTENDED FOR PARTNERS TO PARENTS OR SENDING CONVERSATION ABOUT THE BOSS WITH A COLLEAGUE TO OFFICE WHATSAPP GROUP.

People often make silly mistakes like sending messages intended for partners to parents or sending conversation about the boss with a colleague to office WhatsApp group. This was addressed by the Whatsapp as the company allowed users to delete the sent messages. However, there was a little complaint about the feature that people had – that this had a time frame of seven minutes. However, in its latest update, the Facebook-owned messaging app is expected to soon extend the time frame in which a message can be deleted.

Earlier, the messaging app had introduced the Delete for Everyone feature last year in November, but, the condition was that the users were allowed to delete a sent message within 420 seconds or 7 minutes. However, reports now say that the company will soon allow users to delete a message in 4096 seconds, that is, 68 minutes and 16 seconds to be exact.
As per reports, the company is testing this new update available and soon roll it for all WhatsApp users. As of now, the feature is only available for beta users on Android and is yet to make it to the iOS as well. The new update was created by the company after a number of users complained that messages were recovered by the recipient from the notification log. The new update is also said to fix the gif section crash and bring in some more Emojis.
In another remarkable feature, WhatsApp is reportedly working on new ‘Forwarded message’ that will help the receiver aware about the source of the message if he/she has forwarded the message. The new feature was seen for the very first time on the latest Android beta version, i.e., v2.18.67. This feature may be something similar to Gmail message forwarding, where the recipient gets the details of the sender if a message is forwarded.

Over the years, WhatsApp has become a primary chat tool for millions of smartphone users across the world. The company, owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook, keeps rolling out new features for the users. Group chat and video calling are particularly one of the most famous features company has rolled out since its inception.

New Matrix Phone Revived As Nokia 8110 4G

New Nokia 8110 with 4G capabilities

A big part of the Nokia brand's cache comes from its heydey as one of the leading lights in the mobile industry, back before smartphones. Back then, the firm was one of the best feature phone makers on the planet, alongside other similar pioneering industry giants such as Motorola.

Of course, times have changed a fair bit since then.

Recently, however, we've seen HMD Global, in its role as steward of the Nokia brand, revive the old-school Nokia 3310 smartphone with 4G capability, bright modern colours, and a few design tweaks - predictably called the Nokia 3310 4G.

Now the firm is at it again. At MWC 2018, HMD launched the Nokia 8110 4G; an updated version of the classic cruvy slide-open feature phone which everyone wanted back in the day when they saw it in The Matrix.

It is a little different now though. Back then it was quite sleek and serious looking with dark colours. The new reboot is bright yellow and, frankly, people calling it "the banana phone" have very good  reason to do so. Fortunately, however, there is also a black version.

As with the 3310 reboot, the Nokia 8110 4G not only features a re-design and added 4G capability, but it also has some built-in app features, including Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Search, Facebook, Twitter, and the old classic game; Snake.

The standout spec is the main appeal of feature phones - the battery life. HMD says the Nokia 8110 4G will last a full 17 days on a single charge.

With a smattering of apps aboard, the phone does need some kind of software core to pin them to. HMD has paired with KaiOS - a feature phone OS company - the software is based on Linux and Firefox OS

The new Nokia 8110 4G mimics the design functionality of the original, with the slide cover mechanism beign used to answer and end calls. The new model features voice-over-LTE call capability, has access to a KaiOS app store, and runs on a Qualcomm 205 processor.

Here's the full spec sheet:
  • 2G: 900/1800, 3G: WB-CDMA 1/5/8/39, 4G: FDD-LTE 1/3/5/7/8/20, TDD-LTE 39/40/41/(38)

Microsoft and Xiaomi to extend their partnership

Xiaomi and Microsoft are all set to expand their partnership. They will be working together on cloud, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and more. Microsoft and Xiaomi had worked earlier together on a “patent cross-licensing and app pre-install deal”. Now, they have signed the Strategic Framework Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Hence, now they are working towards strengthening their relationship further with AI, cloud computing, hardware and more.

Partnership
As per the statement released by Xiaomi and Microsoft, The agreement which will be signed by both the parties would mainly focus in four distinct areas. Both the companies decided to introduce Cortana in Xiaomi’s Mi AI speaker. According to their statement, they are cooperating on Microsoft’s AI Tech projects like “Computer Vision, Speech, Natural Language Processing, Text Input, Conversational AI, Knowledge Graph and Search, as well as related Microsoft AI products and services, such as Bing, Edge, Cortana, XiaoIce, SwiftKey, Translator, Pix, Cognitive Services and Skype.”

Till date, Microsoft has successfully created one smart Cortana speaker, Harmon Kardon Invoke. This speaker had a tough time competing with speakers from other bigger Tech companies like Google and Amazon.

As far as Cloud is concerned, Xiaomi will be using Microsoft’s platform Azure which will help to support, “data storage, bandwidth, computing and other cloud services in international markets”.  This will in turn help to expand the market globally. Xiaomi will also combine with Microsoft as a joint marketing and channel support. It will help for the development of products such as Xiaomi’s laptop and other laptop-like devices. These devices would be launched in the international market.

This partnership of Microsoft with Xiaomi will have a major role in allowing access of Microsoft in Chinese market.

The partnership of Microsoft and Xiaomi dates back to 2015, when Microsoft allowed testing of Windows 10 in Xiaomi phones.

.

Statements by both the companies
According to Harry Shun, the executive vice President of Artificial Intelligence and Research Group of Microsoft, Xiaomi is the most innovative companies of China which is growing and becoming popular in the global market. He further expanded his statement as, “Microsoft’s unique strengths and experience in AI, as well as our products like Azure, will enable Xiaomi to develop more cutting-edge technology for everyone around the world.”

In a Press release, Xiaomi also said, “Microsoft’s globally leading technologies in cloud computing and AI.”

As per the estimates of last year, Xiaomi is the fifth largest selling company. It shipped about 92.4 million phones giving a competition to Apple, Samsung and Huawei.

Although, these companies had a partnership earlier, but this one would serve to deliver more benefits. Xiaomi would get more technical benefits and supports from Microsoft if it tries to expand its market all over the world. Microsoft’s AI and cloud service would also expand with a “growing hardware partner”.

In the upcoming time, we can expect more such companies pairing up to bring something better. Yesterday, Tencent and Samsung announced its partnership and stated that their joint investment in AI and games. This partnership was much talked about in CES last month.
