Nubia Red Magic gaming smartphone goes official

08:07 0

Mostly people play heavy game on there smartphone. But Now  ZTE brand Nubia has launched the Red Magic gaming smartphone, as it had announced earlier this week. A company known for gaming laptops, keyboards and mice – launched its very first smartphone last year called Razer Phone. The Razer Phone is a gaming smartphone aimed at mobile gamers. Well soon after the launch of Razer Phone, we are seeing a market for gaming smartphones. Chinese smartphone brand Xiaomi announced its Black Shark gaming smartphone exactly a week ago, and now Nubia, yet another Chinese smartphone brand, has launched a gaming smartphone that’s called Nubia Red Magic. The Nubia Red Magic is a looker. One glance at it, and you will be able to tell it’s a gaming smartphone. It is made out of anodized aluminium and has four grilles at the back. Well, these aren’t speakers. Three of these are actually vents for heat dissipation, and the fourth one is a dummy, to maintain the look you know.

While Xiaomi’s Black Shark relies on liquid cooling, Nubia’s Red Magic relies on air cooling, and that’s what those vents are for. Having said that, the smartphone also comes coated with three layers of graphite that improve heat dissipation by 117%.

That being said, another element that adds to the looks of this gaming smartphone is the glowing strip of RGB LED lights on the back of this phone. I mean just look at it. And, what’s much more interesting about it is that you can customize it to your liking.

Nubia Red Magic specifications

Moving on, the Nubia Red Magic sports a 6-inch 18:9 display, but it has a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels, and, it also doesn’t come with the 120 Hz refresh rate that’s found on the Razer Phone. However, it has a pixel density of 403 ppi, and most of the users may not have much complaints about the display.

The Nubia Red Magic comes in 6 GB and 8 GB RAM variants. The 6 GB RAM variant comes with 64 GB of internal storage whereas the 8 GB RAM variant comes with 128 GB of internal storage. Besides, the smartphone also comes with a slider at the top on its right side. Well, this slider isn’t for adjusting sound settings, but is to enable Gaming Mode for better gaming performance, and you can also choose to block message and call notifications if you don’t want interruptions while gaming.

Nubia Red Magic price, availability

The Nubia Red Magic price starts at CNY 2,499 (roughly Rs. 26,000) for the 6GB RAM, 64GB storage variant, going up to CNY 2,999 (roughly Rs. 31,000) for the 8GB RAM, 128GB storage variant. The smartphone is up for pre-orders, and will go on sale from April 25.

OnePlus 6, the upcoming flagship from OnePlus is expected to launch in the coming few weeks. Possibly before the end of Q2 2018. As always the Chinese phone maker hasn’t left much to the imagination with numerous teasers being release. On Thursday, In a tweet on company’s official Twitter handle on Thursday, OnePlus has released a camera related teaser that suggests the Alert Slider will get capabilities to adjust focus in the phone’s camera. The tweet also shows a teaser hinting the OnePlus 6 naming scheme, similar to the one we saw earlier.  However, it is not clear that the new feature will be available in both rear camera and front camera or just in rear camera. As OnePlus’s OxygenOS is known for its highly customizable thing. Users might be able to disable this feature.

On OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T, the Alert Slider has been used to change the user profiles. It was named as ‘Do Not Disturb, Ring, and Silent.’ The Company could possibly roll new Alert Slider capabilities to older phones through future software updates.

Xiaomi’s BlackShark Gaming Smartphone Listed Online

It comes with a metal unibody design with chamfered edges and is covered by a 2.5D curved glass on the top. Talking about the specifications, the first smartphone from BlackShark will be coming with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor coupled with Adreno 630 GPU. It also includes 8GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. We expect the device to be made available in different storage options.

As we reported earlier, the device might come with the aviation-class cooling system. Since its a gaming-centric device, we expect the company to make even more tweaks. However, we don’t expect the device to be slim or sleek like other flagship devices. While Xiaomi recently launched the MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, the upcoming BlackShark smartphone is listed to come with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box.

Let’s wait and see whether it comes with MIUI skin or not. Talking about the display, it offers 18:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ (2160 x 1080 pixels) resolution. Te BlackShark with 270680 Antutu score has crossed other Snapdragon 845 powered devices including Samsung Galaxy S9 and Asus Zenfone 5z. The BlackShark will be competing with the Snapdragon 835 powered RazerPhone. The RazerPhone came with a 120Hz display and 4000mAh battery.

Latest: BlackShark SKR-A0 Spotted on Geekbench with Snapdragon 845 & 8GB RAM

Last month, we exclusively reported about the possible launch of a gaming smartphone from Xiaomi in China. Laster, we also found the Antutu listing of the BlackShark smartphone revealing all the key specifications. Even the company also teased the design of the device by listing it on their official website. Now, the same BlackShark smartphone is spotted on Geekbench with the model number SKR-A0. The device specifications from the Geekbench are similar to the details we found on Antutu.

Based on the listing, the Xiaomi’s first gaming-centric smartphone has scored 2481 on the single core test and 8595 on the multi-core test. Earlier this week, another Xiaomi smartphone with the codename Dipper is found on Geekbench. It is mentioned to come with Snapdragon 845 SoC and 6GB of RAM. The Xiaomi Dipper has scored 2449 on the single core test and 8309 on the multi-core test.

Warning – 3 Popular VPN Services Are Leaking Your IP Address

01:41 0

Researchers found critical vulnerabilities in three popular VPN services that could leak users' real IP addresses and other sensitive data.
VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a great way to protect your daily online activities that work by encrypting your data and boosting security, as well as useful to obscure your actual IP address.
While some choose VPN services for online anonymity and data security, one major reason many people use VPN is to hide their real IP addresses to bypass online censorship and access websites that are blocked by their ISPs.

But what if when the VPN you thought is protecting your privacy is actually leaking your sensitive data and real location?
A team of three ethical hackers hired by privacy advocate firm VPN Mentor revealed that three popular VPN service providers—HotSpot Shield, PureVPN, and Zenmate—with millions of customers worldwide were found vulnerable to flaws that could compromise user's privacy.
The team includes application security researcher Paulos Yibelo, an ethical hacker known by his alias 'File Descriptor' and works for Cure53, and whereas, the identity of third one has not been revealed on demand.
PureVPN is the same company who lied to have a 'no log' policy, but a few months ago helped the FBI with logs that lead to the arrest of a Massachusetts man in a cyberstalking case.
After a series of privacy tests on the three VPN services, the team found that all three VPN services are leaking their users' real IP addresses, which can be used to identify individual users and their actual location.
Concerning consequences for end users, VPN Mentor explains that the vulnerabilities could "allow governments, hostile organizations [sic], or individuals to identify the actual IP address of a user, even with the use of the VPNs."
The issues in ZenMate and PureVPN have not been disclosed since they haven't yet patched, while VPN Mentor says the issues discovered in ZenMate VPN were less severe than HotSpot Shield and PureVPN.

The team found three separate vulnerabilities in AnchorFree's HotSpot Shield, which have been fixed by the company. Here's the list:
  • Hijack all traffic (CVE-2018-7879) — This vulnerability resided in Hotspot Shield’s Chrome extension and could have allowed remote hackers to hijack and redirect victim's web traffic to a malicious site.
  • DNS leak (CVE-2018-7878) — DNS leak flaw in Hotspot Shield exposed users' original IP address to the DNS server, allowing ISPs to monitor and record their online activities.
  • Real IP Address leak (CVE-2018-7880) — This flaw poses a privacy threat to users since hackers can track user's real location and the ISP. the issue occurred because the extension had a loose whitelist for "direct connection." Researchers found that any domain with localhost, e.g., localhost.foo.bar.com, and 'type=a1fproxyspeedtest' in the URL bypass the proxy and leaks real IP address.

Here it must be noted that all the three vulnerabilities were in the HotSpot Shield's free Chrome plug-in, not in the desktop or smartphone apps.
The researchers also reported similar vulnerabilities in the Chrome plugins of Zenmate and PureVPN, but for now, the details of the bugs are being kept under wraps since both the manufacturers have not yet fixed them.
Researchers believe that most other VPN services also suffer from similar issues.

Massive continuously growing malware campaign that has already infected nearly 5 million mobile devices worldwide.

01:28 0

Security researchers have discovered a massive continuously growing malware campaign that has already infected nearly 5 million mobile devices worldwide.

Dubbed RottenSys, the malware that disguised as a 'System Wi-Fi service' app came pre-installed on millions of brand new smartphones manufactured by Honor, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, Samsung and GIONEE—added somewhere along the supply chain.
All these affected devices were shipped through Tian Pai, a Hangzhou-based mobile phone distributor, but researchers are not sure if the company has direct involvement in this campaign.

According to Check Point Mobile Security Team, who uncovered this campaign, RottenSys is an advanced piece of malware that doesn't provide any secure Wi-Fi related service but takes almost all sensitive Android permissions to enable its malicious activities.

"According to our findings, the RottenSys malware began propagating in September 2016. By March 12, 2018, 4,964,460 devices were infected by RottenSys," researchers said.

To evade detection, the fake System Wi-Fi service app comes initially with no malicious component and doesn’t immediately start any malicious activity.
Instead, RottenSys has been designed to communicate with its command-and-control servers to get the list of required components, which contain the actual malicious code.
RottenSys then downloads and installs each of them accordingly, using the "DOWNLOAD_WITHOUT_NOTIFICATION" permission that does not require any user interaction.

Hackers Earned $115,000 in Just Last 10 Days

t this moment, the massive malware campaign pushes an adware component to all infected devices that aggressively displays advertisements on the device’s home screen, as pop-up windows or full-screen ads to generate fraudulent ad-revenues.

"RottenSys is an extremely aggressive ad network. In the past 10 days alone, it popped aggressive ads 13,250,756 times (called impressions in the ad industry), and 548,822 of which were translated into ad clicks," researchers said.

According to the CheckPoint researchers, the malware has made its authors more than $115,000 in the last 10 days alone, but the attackers are up to "something far more damaging than simply displaying uninvited advertisements."
Since RottenSys has been designed to download and install any new components from its C&C server, attackers can easily weaponize or take full control over millions of infected devices.
The investigation also disclosed some evidence that the RottenSys attackers have already started turning millions of those infected devices into a massive botnet network.
Some infected devices have been found installing a new RottenSys component that gives attackers more extensive abilities, including silently installing additional apps and UI automation.

How to Detect and Remove Android Malware?

To check if your device is being infected with this malware, go to Android system settings→ App Manager, and then look for the following possible malware package names:
com.android.yellowcalendarz (每日黄历)
com.changmi.launcher (畅米桌面)
com.android.services.securewifi (系统WIFI服务)
com.system.service.zdsgt
If any of above is in the list of your installed apps, simply uninstall it.

Last year, HTC launched a flagship high-end smartphone that appeared to be worth the money. The reviews were generally positive, especially when it came time to point out how eye-catching the handset was thanks to those striking color choices. But, as has been the case with a lot of HTC-branded smartphones, the U11 faded out of the limelight pretty quickly.

Here one day, gone the next.

This happens to a lot of phones, of course. A lot of phones see the light of day every year, and there's only so much room in the news cycle for so many. Samsung's Galaxy S9 will rake in most of the attention throughout the beginning of this year, but even it, too, will eventually just slip out of the news cycle.

Except when it comes to comparisons. The Galaxy S9 is one of those smartphones that is so good that it will inevitably be compared to all future handsets launched this year, both from Android manufacturers and the inevitable iPhone X successor that arrives later this year.

But, just like last year, and the year before that, HTC is going to try and win over a few new potential customers, and hopefully keep the loyalists around for another extended stretch of time. That handset looks to be the U12+, which was leaked out not too long ago. It has all of the specifications that we'd expect in 2018 from a high-end flagship, including the powerful processor, the big display and minimal bezels, and more cameras than we probably need.

The image that leaked out recently shows off the back and front of the rumored handset, but the overall quality of the image isn't great. We can see all of the things mentioned above: Two cameras on the back, the fingerprint sensor, the pair of cameras on the front, and the minimized bezels. But the handset itself isn't that appealing to me. Especially that camera system on the back. I'm not a fan of that aesthetic at all. The silver stands out, and not in a good way.

But, like I said the quality of the image isn't great and maybe whatever color options HTC has in store for us this year can make that silver pop-out less unappealing.

The leak of the U12+'s specs and design got me wondering early this morning if this is going to be the handset that catapults HTC to the top of the heap again. There is a lot of competition out there, and HTC has a hard road ahead of it. And now I'm wondering what, exactly, HTC might be able to do to sway you over to their brand this year.

What, if anything, do you think HTC could do in 2018 --whether with their first high-end flagship phone of the year or some other device later on-- to convince you to either switch to an HTC smartphone, or stick with them for a little longer? Or have you completely moved on from the HTC brand?

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus serves up the big-screen experience on a shoestring

07:02 0

a massive deal in its homeland thanks to its range of well-made smartphones which deliver a polished user experience at a low cost.

Times are perhaps changing for the company, however; its Mi Mix and Mi Mix 2 phones are premium propositions and it has been eyeing up a move into western markets for quite some time.

Even so, it hasn't forgotten its budget roots, and with that in mind we're taking a look at the Redmi 5, Xiaomi's attempt to bring 16:9 screens to the masses.

It's available from online resellers such as GearBest for around £130 – making it one of the most attractive low-cost Android phones on the market right now.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Design & Display

Xiaomi used to reserve its "phablet" style budget phones for the Redmi Note range, but this year it has dropped the "Note" moniker and has simply created two versions of the same basic handset - the Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus. The former has a 720p screen and weaker chipset, but is cheaper and smaller. The Plus version – which is what we're reviewing here – has the same basic design but a better screen and internal tech.

Much was made of the Redmi 5 range's move to a 16:9 aspect ratio screen when it was first announced, and it certainly doesn't disappoint. There are still small bezels at the top and bottom of the display, but they're drastically reduced when compared to what budget buyers have been used to over the past few years.

In terms of overall dimensions the Redmi 5 Plus is around the same size as the OnePlus 5T, and has a pleasant rounded design which makes it comfortable to hold. Most of the bodywork is metal, but there are plastic sections at both ends which allow the antenna to function. In terms of design language it shares a lot with previous Xiaomi phones, and that's no bad thing.

The power button and volume rocker are on the right-hand edge, while the dual Nano SIM tray – which doubles as a MicroSD slot – is on the left. The bottom has a single speaker and a Micro USB port (no USB Type-C here, unfortunately) and the top has a 3.5mm headphone jack and IR blaster, the latter being a common feature on Xiaomi's phones. On the back, there's a 12 megapixel camera, LED flash and fingerprint scanner; the scanner rests just under your finger when you're holding the phone and is both fast and accurate. The 5.99-inch IPS screen may lack the punch of an OLED panel but for £130, it's hard to complain. It's a 1080p display so everything looks sharp, and colours are generally bold and lively. Even blacks are quite deep, which makes a nice change from the pale and pasty IPS screens we've seen on other budget blowers. In direct sunlight it can be a bit hard to see, but otherwise this is an excellent panel.

News for Whatsapp User(WHATSAPP DELETE UPDATE)

WHATSAPP DELETE NEWS UPDATE: NEW ADDITION TO SAVE YOU FROM A LOT OF EMBARRASSMENT SOON

PEOPLE OFTEN MAKE SILLY MISTAKES LIKE SENDING MESSAGES INTENDED FOR PARTNERS TO PARENTS OR SENDING CONVERSATION ABOUT THE BOSS WITH A COLLEAGUE TO OFFICE WHATSAPP GROUP.

People often make silly mistakes like sending messages intended for partners to parents or sending conversation about the boss with a colleague to office WhatsApp group. This was addressed by the Whatsapp as the company allowed users to delete the sent messages. However, there was a little complaint about the feature that people had – that this had a time frame of seven minutes. However, in its latest update, the Facebook-owned messaging app is expected to soon extend the time frame in which a message can be deleted.

Earlier, the messaging app had introduced the Delete for Everyone feature last year in November, but, the condition was that the users were allowed to delete a sent message within 420 seconds or 7 minutes. However, reports now say that the company will soon allow users to delete a message in 4096 seconds, that is, 68 minutes and 16 seconds to be exact.
As per reports, the company is testing this new update available and soon roll it for all WhatsApp users. As of now, the feature is only available for beta users on Android and is yet to make it to the iOS as well. The new update was created by the company after a number of users complained that messages were recovered by the recipient from the notification log. The new update is also said to fix the gif section crash and bring in some more Emojis.
In another remarkable feature, WhatsApp is reportedly working on new ‘Forwarded message’ that will help the receiver aware about the source of the message if he/she has forwarded the message. The new feature was seen for the very first time on the latest Android beta version, i.e., v2.18.67. This feature may be something similar to Gmail message forwarding, where the recipient gets the details of the sender if a message is forwarded.

Over the years, WhatsApp has become a primary chat tool for millions of smartphone users across the world. The company, owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook, keeps rolling out new features for the users. Group chat and video calling are particularly one of the most famous features company has rolled out since its inception.

New Matrix Phone Revived As Nokia 8110 4G

23:50 0

New Nokia 8110 with 4G capabilities

A big part of the Nokia brand's cache comes from its heydey as one of the leading lights in the mobile industry, back before smartphones. Back then, the firm was one of the best feature phone makers on the planet, alongside other similar pioneering industry giants such as Motorola.

Of course, times have changed a fair bit since then.

Recently, however, we've seen HMD Global, in its role as steward of the Nokia brand, revive the old-school Nokia 3310 smartphone with 4G capability, bright modern colours, and a few design tweaks - predictably called the Nokia 3310 4G.

Now the firm is at it again. At MWC 2018, HMD launched the Nokia 8110 4G; an updated version of the classic cruvy slide-open feature phone which everyone wanted back in the day when they saw it in The Matrix.

It is a little different now though. Back then it was quite sleek and serious looking with dark colours. The new reboot is bright yellow and, frankly, people calling it "the banana phone" have very good  reason to do so. Fortunately, however, there is also a black version.

As with the 3310 reboot, the Nokia 8110 4G not only features a re-design and added 4G capability, but it also has some built-in app features, including Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Search, Facebook, Twitter, and the old classic game; Snake.

The standout spec is the main appeal of feature phones - the battery life. HMD says the Nokia 8110 4G will last a full 17 days on a single charge.

With a smattering of apps aboard, the phone does need some kind of software core to pin them to. HMD has paired with KaiOS - a feature phone OS company - the software is based on Linux and Firefox OS

The new Nokia 8110 4G mimics the design functionality of the original, with the slide cover mechanism beign used to answer and end calls. The new model features voice-over-LTE call capability, has access to a KaiOS app store, and runs on a Qualcomm 205 processor.

Here's the full spec sheet:
  • 2G: 900/1800, 3G: WB-CDMA 1/5/8/39, 4G: FDD-LTE 1/3/5/7/8/20, TDD-LTE 39/40/41/(38)
  • OS: Smart Feature OS from KaiOS
  • Chipset: Qualcomm® 205 Mobile Platform (MSM8905 Dual Core 1.1 GHz)
  • RAM: 512MB LPDDR3
  • Storage: 4GB eMMC internal memory4
  • Display: 2.4-inch QVGA display, curved display
  • Camera: 2MP rear camera
  • Connectivity/Sensors: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, BT 4.1, GPS/AGPS, micro USB 2.0, 3.5mm AV jack
  • Battery2: 1500mAh
  • FM radio
  • Audio playback file formats: AAC, AMR, MP3, MIDI, Vorbis
  • Micro SIM slot

Xiaomi and Microsoft are all set to expand their partnership.

07:33 0

Microsoft and Xiaomi to extend their partnership

Xiaomi and Microsoft are all set to expand their partnership. They will be working together on cloud, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and more. Microsoft and Xiaomi had worked earlier together on a “patent cross-licensing and app pre-install deal”. Now, they have signed the Strategic Framework Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Hence, now they are working towards strengthening their relationship further with AI, cloud computing, hardware and more.

Partnership
As per the statement released by Xiaomi and Microsoft, The agreement which will be signed by both the parties would mainly focus in four distinct areas. Both the companies decided to introduce Cortana in Xiaomi’s Mi AI speaker. According to their statement, they are cooperating on Microsoft’s AI Tech projects like “Computer Vision, Speech, Natural Language Processing, Text Input, Conversational AI, Knowledge Graph and Search, as well as related Microsoft AI products and services, such as Bing, Edge, Cortana, XiaoIce, SwiftKey, Translator, Pix, Cognitive Services and Skype.”

Till date, Microsoft has successfully created one smart Cortana speaker, Harmon Kardon Invoke. This speaker had a tough time competing with speakers from other bigger Tech companies like Google and Amazon.

As far as Cloud is concerned, Xiaomi will be using Microsoft’s platform Azure which will help to support, “data storage, bandwidth, computing and other cloud services in international markets”.  This will in turn help to expand the market globally. Xiaomi will also combine with Microsoft as a joint marketing and channel support. It will help for the development of products such as Xiaomi’s laptop and other laptop-like devices. These devices would be launched in the international market.

This partnership of Microsoft with Xiaomi will have a major role in allowing access of Microsoft in Chinese market.

The partnership of Microsoft and Xiaomi dates back to 2015, when Microsoft allowed testing of Windows 10 in Xiaomi phones.

.

Statements by both the companies
According to Harry Shun, the executive vice President of Artificial Intelligence and Research Group of Microsoft, Xiaomi is the most innovative companies of China which is growing and becoming popular in the global market. He further expanded his statement as, “Microsoft’s unique strengths and experience in AI, as well as our products like Azure, will enable Xiaomi to develop more cutting-edge technology for everyone around the world.”

In a Press release, Xiaomi also said, “Microsoft’s globally leading technologies in cloud computing and AI.”

As per the estimates of last year, Xiaomi is the fifth largest selling company. It shipped about 92.4 million phones giving a competition to Apple, Samsung and Huawei.

Although, these companies had a partnership earlier, but this one would serve to deliver more benefits. Xiaomi would get more technical benefits and supports from Microsoft if it tries to expand its market all over the world. Microsoft’s AI and cloud service would also expand with a “growing hardware partner”.

In the upcoming time, we can expect more such companies pairing up to bring something better. Yesterday, Tencent and Samsung announced its partnership and stated that their joint investment in AI and games. This partnership was much talked about in CES last month.

So this is why The Nokia 8 Pro's Penta-Lens Camera are Special

00:07 0

The Nokia 8 Pro's penta-lens camera could be much more than just a mere gimmick

With the new rumour going round that Nokia (well, HMD Global) will be launching a new Nokia 8 Pro in the tail end of 2018 which will be equipped with a penta-lens camera, there is, somewhat understandably, a certain amount of confusion over what this entails.

It doesn't help that the information we actually have on the new camera hardware is extremely limited; next to nothing has been revealed so far.

Some of this seems to be manifesting as cynicism or even outright disbelief, I've seen a lot of negative comments in the blogosphere on the subject - which is fine of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it seems to me this is largely driven by some key misunderstandings.

Consumers and reviewers, it seems, get quite irritated when firms appear to "pile on more of the same", we've seen this with processor cores, we've seen it with camera megapixel ratings, we've even seen it to some degree with display sizes and resolutions.

More for, apparently, the sake of more, isn't met with much enthusiasm, as it is seen as a rather shameless arms race and cash grab. Perhaps it is seen as representing a lack of imagination and a preference to just add "more" of the same rather than truly innovate.

Now with dual-sensor cameras becoming a prominent feature of many flagships, the idea of someone coming in and throwing five on the back of a new phone does seem rather nuts.

But this is where I find myself having to defend HMD/Nokia. For starters, there is a difference with what is apparently being proposed here from the dual-sensor trend. Note the use of the word "lens" in describing a penta-lens setup, as opposed to sensor.

It's also thought to be running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, which actually has built-in support for up to seven cameras up to a 32MP rating, with 4K video support and dual-pixel phase-detection autofocus.

According to a report from NPU, which sourced a patent by camera firm and Nokia partner Carl rotating zoom mechanism. The patent is dubbed a "miniature zoom camera".
Zeiss, this will likley facilitate a

"These multiple lenses can rotate and come in focal path of a fixed primary lens and detector. This by design will help in changing the focal length and providing with a large zoom range. The patent does mention that this is meant especially for Mobile Phones," said the report.

So it would appear this setup has five lenses, not five sensors, at most it seems to have just one or two sensors, like a current flagship dual-camera phone.

The report then went on to quote its original source:

"The invention relates to a miniature zoom camera which can be used especially in mobile phones. The invention is based on the object to provide a zoom camera, which realizes at a low depth in the direction of the optical axis of the optical system, sufficiently good image quality and a comparatively large zoom range."

"According to the invention it is provided that the miniature zoom camera having a miniaturized zoom system, which lens group and a plurality of interchangeable second lens groups is constructed (as seen in the direction of light) from a fixed first, each of the second lens group has a different focal length and is arranged on a common lens wearers and wherein the lens carrier is supported and movable, that each one of the second lens groups is positioned in a beam path between the first lens group and the detector."

Incidentally, this also fits rather well with a promo  video from Carl Zeiss and Nokia announcing their cooperation last year.

What we're looking at here, though not yet confirmed, appears to be the first true mechanical optical zoom camera in a smartphone, one which will rotate various zoom lenses in front of a main camera sensor.

Zeiss and Nokia seem to be trying to actually innovate, rather than simply adding more sensors for the sake of it - the dual-sensor trend so far has offered some limited zoom capabilities, but quite often at the cost of overall image quality.

This penta-lens tech may well be a no-compromise solution, and would also go some way to genuinely closing the gap between smartphone cameras and traditional cameras with changeable lenses.

Messenger Kids app arrives to Android devices and iOS (Best Social Media App For Kids)

06:19 0

  • Messenger Kids lets kids under 13 chat with friends and family, and has no ads
  • Parents are able to approve who their kids can message through the app
  • But, experts say it could lure kids into harmful social media practices
  • And, a report claims half of safety advisory board has financial ties to the firm

Facebook is forging ahead with its messaging app for kids, despite child experts who have pressed the company to shut it down and others who question Facebook's financial support of some advisers who approved of the app.
Messenger Kids lets kids under 13 chat with friends and family. It displays no ads and lets parents approve who their children message.
But critics say it serves to lure kids into harmful social media use and to hook young people on Facebook as it tries to compete with Snapchat or its own Instagram app.
They say kids shouldn't be on such apps at all - although they often are.
Facebook is forging ahead with its messaging app for kids, despite child experts who have pressed the company to shut it down and others who question Facebook's financial support of some advisers who approved of the app
'It is disturbing that Facebook, in the face of widespread concern, is aggressively marketing Messenger Kids to even more children,' the Campaign For a Commercial-Free Childhood said in a statement this week.
Messenger Kids launched on iOS to lukewarm reception in December. It arrived on Amazon devices in January and on Android Wednesday.

Throughout, Facebook has touted a team of advisers, academics and families who helped shape the app in the year before it launched.
But a Wired report this week pointed out that more than half of this safety advisory board had financial ties to the company.
Facebook confirmed this and said it hasn't hidden donations to these individuals and groups - although it hasn't publicized them, either.

Facebook's donations to groups like the National PTA (the official name for the Parent Teacher Association) typically covered logistics costs or sponsored activities like anti-bullying programs or events such as parent roundtables.
One advisory group, the Family Online Safety Institute, has a Facebook executive on its board, along with execs from Disney, Comcast and Google.
'We sometimes provide funding to cover programmatic or logistics expenses, to make sure our work together can have the most impact,' Facebook said in a statement, adding that many of the organizations and people who advised on Messenger Kids do not receive financial support of any kind.

But for a company under pressure from many sides - Congress, regulators, advocates for online privacy and mental health - even the appearance of impropriety can hurt.
Facebook didn't invite prominent critics, such as the nonprofit Common Sense Media, to advise it on Messenger Kids until the process was nearly over.
Facebook would not comment publicly on why it didn't include Common Sense earlier in the process.
'Because they know we opposed their position,' said James Steyer, the CEO of Common Sense.
The group's stance is that Facebook never should have released a product aimed at kids. 'They know very well our position with Messenger Kids.'

HOW DOES THE MESSENGER FOR KIDS APP WORK?

  • Messenger Kids is a standalone app that can be controlled from a parent’s Facebook app.
  • While it can be used on a child’s own device, the service does not create a Facebook account for the child, or give them access to their parents’ accounts.
  • After setting up the account, parents can approve the contacts they will allow their child to chat with.
  • Kids cannot connect with contacts that have not been approved by their parents, according to Facebook.
  • Children also can't delete messages, and the app does not contain ads or in-app purchases.
  • Children can video chat, send photos, videos, and text messages to their approved contacts.

To download the app, one must follow the following steps:

Download: First, download the Messenger Kids app on your child's iPad, iPod touch, or iPhone from the App Store.
Authenticate: Then, authenticate your child's device using your own Facebook username and password. This will not create a Facebook account for your child or give them access to your Facebook account.
Create an account: Finish the setup process by creating an account for your child, where all you'll need to do is provide their name. Then the device can be handed over to the child so they can start chatting with the family and friends you approve.
Add contacts: To add people to your child's approved contact list, go to the Messenger Kids parental controls panel in your main Facebook app. To get there, click on 'More' on the bottom right corner in your main Facebook app, and click 'Messenger Kids' in the Explore section

Few weeks after Messenger Kids launched, nearly 100 outside experts banded together to urge Facebook to shut down the app , which it has not done.
The company says it is 'committed to building better products for families, including Messenger Kids.
That means listening to parents and experts, including our critics.'
One of Facebook's experts contested the notion that company advisers were in Facebook's pocket.
Lewis Bernstein, now a paid Facebook consultant who worked for Sesame Workshop (the nonprofit behind Sesame Street) in various capacities over three decades, said the Wired article 'unfairly' accused him and his colleagues for accepting travel expenses to Facebook seminars.

Get yourself a Sony PS4 with your next phone

06:37 0

Just a few years ago, I vividly remember some of the free gifts being given away with some of the less-popular phones. Usually these would be in the back of newspapers, and you’d find some Nokia B7 Lite (I made up that name) on offer with a “free” TV. Sure, you’d spend quite a bit per month (and you’d end up with a phone you probably didn’t really want), but hey.. a TV!

Now the boys at Sky Mobile are rolling our a new offer for customers buying selected Xperia handsets. Get the handsets on Swap24 and Swap12 plans and you’ll get yourself a PlayStation 4 at no additional cost. Not only that, but they’ll also chuck in Gran Turismo Sport for you to play on your new gadget too! Oh, and if that isn’t enough, anyone purchasing an Xperia phone will also receive a Sky Store voucher, so you can watch a movie for free!

The Sony PlayStation and Xperia bundle is available on the Xperia XA2 and also includes the flagship XZ range of phones. That means you can get the XZ Premium, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact. Prices start from £25 a month for the Xperia XA2, which includes 500MB of data and Unlimited Calls & Texts for Sky TV customers on Swap24.

Sky Mobile uses the O2 masts. They include features such as…

Roll – This lets you roll over unused data into a Sky Piggybank each month. You can then use this whenever you need – for up to three years.
Mix – Create a plan of calls, texts and data that suits you. Change every month.
Save – Sky TV customers get Unlimited Calls & Texts for free.
Swap – The Swap12 and Swap24 contracts let you upgrade your phone every 1 or two years respectively. No need to change contract!

The Samsung Galaxy X a Revolutionary Device

03:52 0

The Samsung Galaxy X will be a revolutionary device, but it won't be amazing

Samsung needs to hurry its ass up and get truly foldable and flexible OLED display devices to market sooner rather than later. And I specifically single out Samsung because it's the market leader for OLED generally, and flexible OLED specifically - it has the biggest flexible OLED production capacity, the most financial and R&D investment into the technology, and the longest term of development experience with it too; it has, after all, been tinkering with and saying it will do something with flexible OLED for at least the last five years. Probably longer if you factor in time before that where it was likely working on prototypes but keeping quiet about it.
My reasons for saying that a truly folding OLED phone is urgently needed surround the fact that the market is starting to stagnate, and differentiation between brands has trailed off quite significantly.
In other words, the industry needs a boot up the backside, a fresh, shiny, flexible OLED boot that can introduce entriely new form factors and designs.
The iPhone-like slab shape is now ubiquitous, and has been for some time, and now metal and glass design has reached the same level too.

So with all that said, you might think I'd be really excited about the prospect of the Samsung Galaxy X finally breaking cover inside 2018, as it is rumoured to, and becoming the first truly flexible and folding OLED display device on the market.

Well I am, in a sense, but as the title suggests, I also don't think it'll be all that exciting either.
Why? Well for starters it's been established by the rumour mill that it'll be a "test bed" device; it'll likely have  a limited run of about 100,000 units which will only see distribution in South Korea.
There's a precedent for this as well; Samsung did exactly this with the Galaxy Note EDGE, the first device featuring flexible OLED ever. Here it was implemented in the now-familiar curved edge screen configuration under fixed glass. That phone only had one edge curved as a proof-of-concept, it launched alongside the Galaxy Note 4 in late 2014, but again, was only available as a small Limited Edition batch in Samsung's home country.
It wasn't particularly exciting either; you couldn't get hold of it, but even if you could, there wasn't much special about it because it was just meant to test the idea out rather than really showboat about it.
Evidently the feedback was positive though - the test bed was successful - because Samsung then went on to produce the Samsung Galaxy S6 EDGE in 2015 and has been producing curved edge OLED screened phones ever since. In fact now with the Galaxy S8 series and Galaxy Note 8, Samsung doesn't have any flat screens in its flagship portfolio; curved displays are the norm.
So, I'm basically expecting the same with the introduction of true flexible form factors using flexible OLED, which the Samsung Galaxy X is supposed to be the beginning of. By most accounts from the rumour mill, the design of the Galaxy X is pretty simple - just as the Galaxy Note EDGE's was.
Where the Galaxy Note EDGE was just a Galaxy Note 4 with one edge curving round, the Galaxy X is apparently much like an old-school clamshell phone which can become more compact in your pocket, but when folded out has a full touchscreen which folds along the middle.
This is cool, but it's not living up to the full potential of what makes truly folding and flexible OLED so exciting in terms of injecting some much-needed change, innovation and excitement into the industry; a clamshell, after all, feels like something of a step backwards, though some who are tired of 6in screens stretching their pockets might welcome the idea, it must be said.
The really excting prospect is something more along the line of your standard-looking 5in phone which can fold out into a much bigger tablet-sized device, rendering redundant the need for tablets or phablets, and turning people's phones into true all-in-one devices.
If Samsung's past examples are any measure, this won't happen until Samsung gets the kind of positive feedback it needs from the test bed Galaxy X device, so we're looking at another cycle before it hits the "mainstream" so to speak and does what the Galaxy S6 EDGE did.

I'd say that's likely going to happen in 2019, although if I'm being generous (and some rumours do support this idea) we could see something clever on the Galaxy Note 9 in late 2018.
